I often ask, "What does it mean that, we are all one?". Intellectually I understand yet I don't feel it. When I look at a tree I can see that the tree does not exist alone. It needs to breath air and drink water. It has its roots deep into the earth. Various fungi grow on the rootlets allowing the tree to take in minerals. Certain animals, insects and birds live in and around the tree. They live in a symbiotic relationship with the tree. As the earth appears to be one living organism from space, so are humans an integral part of the earth. We have an identity separate from the earth as do the bacteria that live on us. Yet, we are so united that our actions affect everything around us.

As I wrote this song, I thought of how often human beings feel isolated and unconnected from life and other human beings. So I imagined that I could show the creatures and children and friends that we are all one. The last line says, "I reach my arms around the world, I find a friend who is like a pearl .." Years ago a friend of mine was thinking of someone special and called that friend a pearl. This thought came back to me when I was looking for a word that might describe a friend. Pearl fit just right.
